Celebrating Student Voices: Top Two Tips from New Bridge College and Future Finders Employability College

Intro To The School

Last summer term marked a special occasion at New Bridge College and Future Finders Employability College in Oldham, as the student council hosted a celebration event to showcase the impact of Smart School Councils and Big Debate Club.

It was led by their passionate teacher Rizwana Sarwar, a clear advocate for raising pupil voice and well respected by pupils and staff alike. Our membership manager, Karen O' Connor, and project manager, Becky Gittins, had the pleasure of witnessing the amazing work put in by students through their vibrant presentations and videos. It truly showcased how student voices are shaping college life for the better!

The atmosphere was electric as leaders from across the MAT gathered to witness the students' enthusiasm and dedication. Interacting with the students beforehand was a joy, as they shared how Smart School Councils had boosted their confidence and communication skills. They expressed the importance of having their voices heard and appreciated the college's responsiveness to their suggestions.

Scott, one of the leaders, candidly admitted feeling nervous at times during meetings, but saw it as a positive sign of student engagement. This reaffirmed the value of inclusive leadership that listens and acts upon student feedback.

Here are the top two insights on how the college uses the Smart School Councils and Big Debate Club:

Tip #1: Foster Accountability and Ownership

By empowering students to lead specific projects and tasks, they develop a sense of accountability and ownership over the outcomes. At Newbridge College, Smart School Councils plays a pivotal role in driving positive change through initiatives like the "You Said, We Did" board. Led by a dedicated Action Team, students take charge of implementing suggestions and providing feedback to their peers.

Another vital aspect of Smart School Councils is the college newsletter, skillfully curated by Peter, to keep everyone informed about council improvements, including families and leaders.

Tip #2: Expand Student Engagement Opportunities

Newbridge College creates opportunities for student involvement in both the Smart School Council and Big Debate Club. The college collaborates with students, exploring their interests and skills, so students take part in video production, writing or editing as part of their involvement in raising pupil voice. It was clear to see the creativity and talent of the students and seemed to foster an even more inclusive and vibrant student council environment.

The student leaders also offer the whole student body further opportunities to share their voice by surveying them in person on their opinions on specific aspects of college and how they can improve. The college offers a variety of opportunities so students can participate in the way that best suits them.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the day wrapped up, it was clear to see the bright spirit of leadership at Newbridge College. Waj, the student council president, shared a vlog where he spoke about his role in their Smart School Council. He mentioned how he enjoys helping make changes suggested by students and setting up their weekly Class Meeting discussions. Waj even talked about how he assisted another school with their school council. He described the role of the President as being the ‘backbone’ of the council and described that although it could be challenging, it was worth all the effort.

His words showed just how much student leadership can change things for the better. Newbridge's dedication to listening to students sets a great example for schools everywhere.

A huge thank you to the amazing teachers and students at Newbridge College for warmly welcoming us and for their incredible commitment to student leadership and involvement. Here's to many more moments of growth and success ahead!
