Introducing Eileen Mostyn, Intern
My name is Eileen Mostyn and I will be working as an intern at Smart School Councils for this academic term. I am from Philadelphia, USA and I attend the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. This term, I am in London as part of a study abroad programme at my university. This is my first time in the UK, and so I am very excited to be here in London for the next few months!
At Notre Dame, I am studying economics and political science, and although my coursework keeps me very busy, I enjoy participating in several activities outside of class time. I have been playing the clarinet for ten years, and I am a member of several musical ensembles at Notre Dame, including the marching band, concert band, and clarinet choir. I also teach Sunday school classes at a parish near our campus each week.
The Notre Dame London programme encourages students to participate in an internship during their time here, and I thought that doing so would be a great way to add a unique experience to my time abroad. When I read about the mission of Smart School Councils, I knew that I wanted to get involved with the organisation.
I am very passionate about making sure that children have access to a quality education and that all people can engage in democracy, especially those who feel that they have not always been included. The Smart School Councils programme combines these two ideas and makes sure that all children are able to make their voices heard so that they have more control over their own education and feel that they belong in their school community. I think that this is a great way to get children involved and show them that they can make an impact when they participate in democracy.
In my time here, I am really looking forward to helping further this important mission, as well as getting experience with what it’s like to work in a charity like this one. As I prepare to graduate from university in just over a year, I also hope that working here will help to prepare me for a career in a similar field after graduation. I am very excited to be part of Smart School Councils, and I am looking forward to the work I will be able to do here this term.
